OK...now...I have to know...is that a fossil egg? Looks a lot like the ones from the White River badlands. Did you leave it in place because it was in the Badlands National Park, perhaps?

That's the egg of Rupicola peruviana, the national bird of Peru. It's common name is "Andean Cock-of-the-rock" :P
