I found these in the Peace River-Florida.

I was told that these may be mammoth or mastadon enamel fragments.

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks

I cannot tell because of the darkness of the pics in combo with the glossy object. Is it wet in the pics?

Ah, a much nicer picture. Yup, I'll go along with proboscidean tooth plate fragment.

Aren't "tooth plates" usually used when describing alternating layers of dentin and enamel in mammoth teeth? Does this apply to all Pleistocene proboscidean alike? I feel pretty certain that this is an piece of a mastodon or gomphetherium enamel

I agree. This is almost certainly a chunk of mastodont or gomphothere enamel.

Well, I found something I could answer, and again I see others were quicker on the ID. This site rocks.

Yes, I too agree that this is Mastodont or Gomphotherium.

I've pulled much of this stuff from the Peace River myself.

Most of the pieces I've found were not really what might be called 'Display Quality'.

But I've figured out that lots of the fragments I find look nice after they've been tumbled in a rock tumbler.

:o (oh the horror!!)

But I'm loving every minute of it.
