snakebite6769
What is the best way to prep siderite fossils from Mazon Creek. Can tou clean them with hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar? Is the ph or acidity to volatile? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
AgrilusHunter
Yes, you can clean them with vinegar but I would only do so if you have found the fossil split in the field and there is a gray/whitish mineral deposit covering parts of the siderite. I've had some nice fossils show up after cleaning this way. There would be no need to do this with fossils that you split yourself. If your goal is to prep down into the nodule to expose more of an embedded fossil I would suggest taking it to someone with experience in siderite prep. From what I understand siderite is quite difficult to work with, additionally it is often very hard to tell the fossil from the matrix. Hope this helps, please post the results if you have some success.
