fossilfinderCT
Hello everyone! I have recently moved to florida (unfortunately) but prior to that i lived in connecticut. A local sedimentary outcrop from the shuttle meadow formation was not far from my old appartment. I took many trips there in hopes of finding fish fossils, and even though the area was promising no black-gray shale outcrops were visible. i do have many more but here is a piece of what i think is mud cracks in red shale (or mudstone). Once i cracked open the rock this stood out to me immediately... all the other stones of this color in the area were smooth. the interesting thing is on the other side of the sone, seems to be ripple marks. which would make sense considering the mud cracks. any opinions or ideas to what it may be instead, or what type of stone it actually is would be appreciated. once i unpack my remaining boxes i will post more of my finds from this site as well! thanks a bunch everyone, Happy Hunting! also here are a few garnets i collected along the way. the 5 up front are the most complete! Fossildude19
Hey Travis! How's things?? Looks like the beginnings of mudcracks, and some ripple marks to me. You should have inspected the heck out of those rocks - could've been dino prints in the area. The ripple marks are a good indicator of possible prints. Nice garnets - they're definitely nice and plentiful from around your former area. Regards, EDIT: Here are some papers on the Pomperaug Basin: LINK 1 Link 2 Also,... To clarify,... The Shuttle Meadow Formation doesn't actually outcrop in the Pomperaug Basin - your specimen is either from the South Britain Formation, or the Cass Brook Formation., which may be analogous to the Shuttle Meadow. fossilfinderCT
Ah thanks Tim, I just thought that was a generalization for the area. Probably south Britain being it was closer to that area. I'm planning on visiting CT in a few months and hope I can get a chance to get back there. Stinks I had to move after finally breaking ground so to speak : / "Rice is really good when your hungry and want a thousand of something." gjb6774
Hi - Are you aware of any open or fee sites in the area? I'm in Westchester NY and definitely worth the trip based on some images I've been seeing. Any guidance would be appreciated!

There aren't any fee sites in CT, and most of the sites are on private property or state land. A lot of Research and hard work, and permission, are required to find the sites that still exist. I'll be in touch. Regards, Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks."
