Green Mill Run Stream in Greenville North Carolina fossil layers from the Miocene and Pliocene, Upper Yorktown Formation

I found this today. There may not be enough to make an identification but it looks like part of a crab's claw to me.

Tom, I don't think that is crab. Really not sure what it is. I am leaning towards a piece of pet wood. Doesnt really look like bone. Maybe someone else can be more specific, but I do not think it is crab claw.

I agree with you Don, I do not think it is a crab claw or bone. Cool find whatever it is.

The side opposite of the pointed projections does look like petrified wood.

Looks like fish jaw to me

fishy, fishy...

I'll throw my hat in this ring too.

Fish for sure!

Enchodus perhaps?

Cool it may be a fish jaw then..i didn't think of a jaw initially because the piece doesn't show any connection points between the tooth and a jaw. It's just all one smooth piece

I consider a jaw section, but i really don't see "sockets" nor anything that screams bone. I have found many many pounds of bone in GMR but only one jaw section and it was from Anomaeodus phaseolus. I am not saying it couldn't be a fish jaw section, I just don't see it.

Enchodus jaw sections can be found there.

I have found and seen many many enchodus teeth from GMR, but I have never seen a jaw section. If you have one I would love to see a picture of it.

my vote is for worn Enchodus jaw section, perhaps some of the Big Brook collectors would have a better opinion, have seen similar from there

I have several things just like that from Big Brook, although smaller.

I bet there is a wealth of detail hiding under the river encrustation...

Here is a piece of palatine jaw with a tooth that I found on my recent trip to GMR.

Auspex, that is very possible indeed. After seeing NFH's pictures I am more convinced that it is a jaw section. I would love to see it cleaned up.

Ron, very interesting. I have to admit if I had found that I probably would not have thought jaw section.
