Castle Hayne, Nc Quarry

Today was the NC Fossil Club Hunt at the Castle Hayne, NC quarry. The quarry has Eocene, Castle Hayne Formation and then an area of Cretaceuos material. So pleased to be able to get into the quarry due to the fact they really do not allow many collectors now. It was great to have met Fossil Foilist and Plax. Such a wonderful group the NC Fossil Club has! There were quite a few collectors onsite today for the trip and it was a good one. The Eocene area was the usual steep, difficult and step by step approach and I should have taken my walking stick this time! Just wanted to share some of my finds with everyone.

Peek-a-boo echi (sand dollar) and a Maretia subristata echi. The heart echi was covered in soft matrix and I was very delighted it cleaned up like this! I figured one of the aspects would be missing.

Ok, so at the bottom of your "little friend" picture, is that a shark tooth!?!? Seriously I think your little friend is guarding a shark tooth! :P

Ha ha

I'm not a fan of "little friends" interrupting my shark tooth/fossil hunting.

Ha ha.

Looks like a great day though congrats!

DO, or do not. There is no try.

Definately... Leave the tooth in matrix...They look far better naturally displayed ' if you can '.... The last mystery photo looks a bit like (patina wise) a croc scute....

Cheers Steve... And Welcome if your a New Member... :)

This is probably a ray dermal denticle from the Cretaceous. Here's one I have from a different locality, Another possibility is a boxfish dermal denticle from the Eocene.

Plump little Black Widow Spiders. They must have a good habitat in the quarry! Ewwwww.

Hey Mike, it was a good trip and thank you. Yep, that Black Widow Spider was guarding several teeth in her spot. I left the teeth there! I do not like spiders! :o

Thank you Astron! the NC Fossil club is a super group to go with and we had a blast. There were several teeth very close to the Black Widow Spider. She had a nice sized egg case by her and I decided to leave the teeth and not provoke her. Spiders seem like such testy critters!

I am definately leaving the tooth in the matrix. I have a small display box which shall be perfect for it in my son's room. Possibly a croc scute, I will look into that today. :)

Awesome finds! I love the vert! Looks like you had a good trip....

Thank you and the trip was fun, just go hot fast! That vert was a surprise find due to where I was at the last few 10 minutes of the trip. Looks as though the sun has bleached it well. :D

Hello Al Dente! There is quite an amount of ray material in the Cretaceous area whre I was hunting. Your specimen is splendid and the pic is perfect! Here is another pic, a little better than the first one I posted. Could be Boxfish due to there is some reworked material near the spot I was at. Sure looks very similar to the ray one you have! :)
