Anybody Want To Go To Big Brook Nj For Thanksgiving?

Ramo

Recommended Posts

I've been over here on the east coast for work since Sandy hit, and since I don't have any place to go for Thanksgiving, I think I'll drive up and give Big Brook a try. If anybody wants to join me, I guess I'll be trying the Boundry Ave spot. If anybody has any advice for a first time Big Brook hunter, I'd be happy to take it. I'm more of a crawl and scan person than a sifter, so I think that's what I'll be trying. (Most excited about finding some belemnites hopefully, but I'll take shark teeth as well)

Ramo,

Wish I could go. :(

Sorry you're stuck here on the holiday.

I would advise going in on Hillsdale Rd. and work your way over to Boundary Rd.

There is a nice parking area on Hillsdale, and easy access to the river. And lots of belemnites on that end - I'd wager(if I was a betting man, that is!) the first fossil you find will be a belemnite. :)

Also,... bring a gallon milk jug or some other container, (I'm partial to those big plastic pretzel barrels.) and bring some gravel back with you to the hotel to hunt through later.

A pleasant way to spend an evening, at least.

Good luck, Ramo!

Best regards,

what part of the east coast are you at? if your close to NC you should hit gmr. If its belemites you seek then the 10th street pee dee formation exposures produces hundreds in a 1-2 hours trip.

one day i will find a tooth over 3 inches in good conditon haha.

Yes, I'm in NJ. Tim I don't see Hillsdale road on my map program. Can you be a little more specific on directions?

Ramo,

You're going to go left onto Clover Hill Rd. from Boundary, then a quick right onto Hillsdale.

See map.

one of those compact rakes might be a good idea if youre a surface collector, lots of leaves on the gravel bars right now

I'd join you, but I'll be in PA at the time. The leaves are definitely going to be a bother, so you may want to rethink your strategy. I almost always just sift this time of year!

Hey Ramo, I might be able to go if my parents are able to drive me. Also, like you i like looking on the surface a bit more than sifting. I would recommend Ramanessin Brook for surface scanning because it seems to me that there are less leaves and you can find a bit more. Although i have never found a belemite at Ramanessin....

Tim, Thanks. for the info.

Darwin, Guess I'll be going to Walmart and looking for something that works as a sifter.

No problem Ramo!

Just get a cheap plastic collander - that'll work. ;)

Good luck!

Just build your self one with lumber and screen from Home Depot or Lowes. $20 investment for materials and 1/2 hr to construct. You can ask them to cut the lumber into 6"-1' (or however long you want it) pieces, get screen and metal shears, carpet tacks and a hammer.

I'd love to join you but I will be in Central Pennsyltucky this holiday.

Ramo,

You could also use wire mesh desk accessories - if there is a Staples or Target around.

Those might work for some sifting.

Collander like this one will probably be cheapest, though.

I have successfully surface collected Big brook this time of year, but I had a small leaf rake to sweep away the leaves and it was a dry and sunny day. If the leaves are wet, then just sift. I know some TFF members have used gas powered leaf blowers to get rid of leaves over gravel. Or you can come to my house for some Turkey dinner, I'll give you some belemites too.

Scylla, that is a very generous offer, but I'm getting excited about Big Brook. It's one of those spots I'ver heard about for years, but didn't think I'd ever hunt there. It's a long drive from home, where I find alot of the same things.

Thanks again for the dinner offer, Tim offered me a home cooked meal as well when I was up in Connecticut a few weeks ago, and I had to turn him down as well.

I've met more of the nicest people across the country through TFF than most people would imagine.

Wow that is hardcore hunting. Bad enough to haul you gear down the creek. I always thought if I bought a house on the creek, I run a hose down and set up a power sifter. And hire my grandkids to shovel.
