DE&i
I’m planning to go to a place called Abbey wood, London, Kent on an organised fossil hunt it’s a family oriented field trip so shall be taking my son. Apparently it can be very good for shark teeth finds and knowing there are many shark teeth hunters here. We were wandering what sort of equipment would be recommended apart from a strong back and keen eye . http://www.abbeywood.ukfossils.co.uk/ Regards.....D&E&i The only certainty with fossil hunting is the uncertainty. https://lnk.bio/Darren.Withers
Adie_uk
hi I have been looking into this too this week, I think they do a trip once a year have been given the website (its on another post in trips section I think have a quick look) there is stuff on the net just google abbey woods. as far as I know they did out the material and you get to sieve for teeth, they have the sieves and water, think its about £25, will add info in a sec. also found this info/blog? http://sumsphere.wordpress.com/2012/04/18/where-to-collect-fossilised-shark-teeth-in-london/ also http://www.abbeywood.ukfossils.co.uk/ may have to copy and paste? http://www.discussfossils.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1687&title=abbey-wood-kent and a little here http://www.movethat.co.uk/London/My/Abbey_Wood/?threadID=10239 quite a few people just go there dig 2ft down and get lots of teeth (not as many as on a dig where they dig deeper but saves waiting ages for a dig and £25. Bill
Only 2kg of material can be taken so it's best to sieve the stones/sand etc away. One MAJOR point is, digging is only allowed in the one enclosure at the site, you need to ask a ranger where it is exactly. Edited February 8, 2013 by Bill KOF, Bill. THobern
I received some Abbey Wood material in a trade. Those teeth have the oddest preservation.
DE&i
Ive been in contact with David Ward who as kindly put my son and myself on the guest list for this years Abbey Wood dig which pleased my son very much [ shark teeth are you kidding dad ]. He said at the last excavation they had exhausted all the shell bed in the northern half of the digging. And were prospecting the site in the summer , not collecting , just to see whether it is practical to continue digging . Bill
Yeah, I know. Just hoping they find a new extension of the bed.
