fossiladdict
A beautiful day it was indeed for fossil hunting as I decided to go to the Lake today and enjoy the day. Watching the birds, the mist on the lake and the beautiful colors was enough as I set out to collect this morning. I intended to go for just the small fossils but I can easily get sidetracked and ended up with some ammonites and echinoids as well. I should also mention that I ran into Garyc and his wife, very nice couple. I hope I was beneficial in my "garbled up" fossil talk to them. Following are most of my finds for the day (as well as a few finds from the North Sulphur River the other day). Ammonites found (and working on cleaning): The ones definitely going in the yard for future use outside: A few echinoids (including the ones in their usual bath)- I always like to give them a good bath before I go through them and figure out what gets tossed outside v. what gets kept inside: Small ammonites, etc: Small fish verts and various types of teeth: And then of course my two favorites! And the I'm not so sure what this is...looks like a jaw, but I have no clue what kind: North Sulphur River finds, next post... JohnJ
Looks like you had a wonderful day, Lyla. For fun, try shining a laser into your "heart" urchin. The human mind has the ability to believe anything is true. - JJ
fossiladdict
My husband and I ventured out the other day to North Sulphur River- didn't find a whole lot, but did find a few things. Found this large nice vert: It doesn't look all that big till you compare it to some of the other verts I have: Sharks teeth, enamel, etc.: Found this odd object (not even sure it's a fossil): And a nice turritella: Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! Al Dente
Your Paraisurus is nice. Are these shark teeth coming out of limestone or some other rock type?

I wouldn't mind getting sidetracked like that. Context is critical.
Wrangellian
I like the echinoid sticking out of the matrix (the larger one, I assume it is). I sense you will soon need a bunch more Riker mounts!
Foshunter
Lyla you slayed the fossil find record once again, the Paraisurus compressus are so extremely rare it should be right up there with your center piece shark tooth collection, that's the best----Tom Grow Old Kicking And Screaming !!"Don't Tread On Me"
fossiladdict
Your Paraisurus is nice. Are these shark teeth coming out of limestone or some other rock type? Limestone for all general purposes (Duck Creek formation- although I'm still not 100% positive about my formations). I've learned where to look and where not to look in the area. Lyla you slayed the fossil find record once again, the Paraisurus compressus are so extremely rare it should be right up there with your center piece shark tooth collection, that's the best----Tom Tom- that would be at least my 3rd one...I do love the root on this one though. Very detailed. Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! Makes you all giddy inside!

I sense you will soon need a bunch more Riker mounts! Yes...if you notice, there are two other pieces of matrix in the bowl with the loose ones. One contains at least 6 echinoids and the other contains at least 2. No need for riker mounts with those teeth as they are tiny- I keep them in containers I get from the Container Store. It is supposed to be 6 tonight brrrr. Guess that is why I have you all to liev vicariously through ha ha -CQ I dressed like it was going to be 6 here yesterday- weatherman said it was going to be in 50's so I put on layers-- it was 69 when I got back in my vehicle. Unfortunately my layers were not planned to take a layer off if it got hot except for my jacket so I was quite warm by the time I left. It was such a beautiful day though- I can sit on the ground all day long in weather like that! Fossils are simply one of the coolest things on earth--discovering them is just marvelous! fossilselachian
The Paraisurus could be your finding of the decade(s) for a shark tooth. It's a small and not overly impressive tooth but an incredible rarity. Is this your first finding of the species?

Not amber and I'm really not sure; the yellow fossil is an echinoid- what I'm not sure of is what it is made of.
