Fossil Sponges From Russia

Name: Sestrocladia sp.

Class: Hexactinellida

Age: K2st

Location: Saratov, Russian Federation

A unique specimen, that once was damaged by storm, but continued living. It changed the dimension of growth and grew not additional roots (as usual) but additional stem!

Sestrocladia sp.

Only once I had a luck to find a sponge with two stems (main stem is partly damaged). Have you ever found something similar?

Nothing like that. The only thing our sponges have are small, irregular root-like structures on the lower ends of few Heliospongia specimens.

Context is critical.

Those structures are some kind of roots, because sponge needs something to anchor it at the bottom )))

Very nice specimen and a unusual growth pattern too! Thank you for sharing.

Very unusual looking ones.. I love sponge fossils.. I have never found any like those though.

I am afraid that I do not know what age (Age: K2st) is..

Cretaceous? If so what does the 2st mean?

Oh yes, welcome aboard..

Hils-trough for Guettardiscyphis (not sure about the denotation in this case).

Wow. Incredible detail. It looks like someone wrapped a paper towel around it.
