mikecable
Erose's thread on fingerless gloves made me think of my favorite knee pads. I've tried two buck knee pads from Harbor Freight, and destroyed them in one or two trips. Then I found these. http://www.amazon.com/Style-Craft-94-013-Kneepads-Leather/dp/B003DXFVWS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1363135778&sr=8-2&keywords=style+craft+leather+knee+pads The strap was designed for Man Mountain Dean. I had to cut off half the strap and then add about four new holes. These knee pads are virtually indestructible. Plus they have that cool steam punk, Indiana Jones vibe. I've worn more comfortable knee pads, but nothing will ever penetrate these. And if the felt lining wears through I'll just super glue in some more. I found them on Amazon on sale for half the current price. Edited March 13, 2013 by mikecable
Bullsnake
I must not be crawling around enough. I still use my Harbor Freights occasionally. I'll certainly try to remember your suggestion when I upgrade. Thanks mikecable! Steve
flyersfan805
Or, you can get a pair of hockey shin guards like I use every now and then... Incredibly comfortable, and I haven't found anything yet that will puncture! Also bonus is you get protection all the way to your ankle:)
Nandomas
I feel comfortable with wolleyball soft pads, if brand news. In the last times I switches to the garden knee pads... maybe because I am retiring :P Erosion... will be my epitaph! http://www.paleonature.org/ https://fossilnews.org/
RickNC
I wear a set I acquired while I was in the military. These were the issued type and work pretty well.
sixgill pete
I use the hard type from harbor freight. They cost about 5 or 6 bucks and a pair usually lasts from 1 to 2 years depending on how often I do the quarry crawl. I also keep 3 or 4 pairs in the truck, in case one tears up or someone needs a pair. http://www.harborfreight.com/hard-cap-knee-pads-42100.html or this one, both have done well for me http://www.harborfreight.com/black-cap-knee-pads-46698.html Edited March 14, 2013 by sixgill pete Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt behind the trailer, my desert Them red clay piles are heaven on earth I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt Patterson Hood; Drive-By Truckers May 2016 May 2012 Aug 2013, May 2016, Apr 2020 Oct 2022

I've tried both of these, and the elastic velcro straps are stretched out past usability, and the hard plastic caps have cracked after two to four trips. But I do like to get down in the dirt. I like small fossils. I don't get up and down well at my age, but I can crawl with the best of them. So I do the best with what I've got. And my best means I'll wear my tools out.
sixgill pete
I know exactly what you mean by " I don't get up and down well at my age, but I can crawl with the best of them." I spend allot of my time crawling around in quarry's, but I also think it helps in finding allot of things others miss. tooth_claw
These are my favourite brand (I have the 'Professional' type). Great for long days excavating or crawling through caves and I just bung them in the washing machine when they get a bit too filthy. I have not yet had to buy another set! Plus, they are cheaper than another set of knees http://www.kneeon.com/products.html
jgcox
I read this thread with interest as my harbor freight kneepads caused blisters on the backs of my knees. One poster suggested hockey shin guards--I ordered some and used them at Ridgemont Quarry, Penn-Dixie and sites around Cincinnati. They are Fantastic so much so my wife ordered a pair also. Great suggestion.
