mjfolks
I recently found this fossil in Topeka, Ks where I normally hunt concretions. To me it looks like a concretion except for what appears to be an insect on the top of it. The only preparing I've done to it is soak it in soapy water and use a toothbrush to get the dried dirt off of it so see what I had. Any thoughts as to whether or not it's indeed an insect would be appreciated. Thanks, MJ <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/08_zps3474e159.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/08_zps3474e159.jpg" border="0" alt="01 photo 08_zps3474e159.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/02_zps3bf2c2d4.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/02_zps3bf2c2d4.jpg" border="0" alt="02 photo 02_zps3bf2c2d4.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/06_zps2fffe83b.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/06_zps2fffe83b.jpg" border="0" alt="03 photo 06_zps2fffe83b.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/07_zps172ecfac.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/07_zps172ecfac.jpg" border="0" alt="04 photo 07_zps172ecfac.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/04_zps913f3886.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/04_zps913f3886.jpg" border="0" alt="05 photo 04_zps913f3886.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/01_zps6ab6dfc8.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/01_zps6ab6dfc8.jpg" border="0" alt="06 photo 01_zps6ab6dfc8.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/03_zps43180040.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/03_zps43180040.jpg" border="0" alt="07 photo 03_zps43180040.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/10_zps98b5f2ab.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/10_zps98b5f2ab.jpg" border="0" alt="08 photo 10_zps98b5f2ab.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/11_zps1a2bd0da.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/11_zps1a2bd0da.jpg" border="0" alt="09 photo 11_zps1a2bd0da.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/09_zps7f6f08b2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/09_zps7f6f08b2.jpg" border="0" alt="10 photo 09_zps7f6f08b2.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/12_zps10f84679.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/12_zps10f84679.jpg" border="0" alt="11 photo 12_zps10f84679.jpg"/></a> <a href="http://s1097.beta.photobucket.com/user/mjfolks/media/12_zps10f84679.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1097.photobucket.com/albums/g351/mjfolks/12_zps10f84679.jpg" border="0" alt="11 photo 12_zps10f84679.jpg"/></a>

Terry Dactyll
I think that may be mineral staining on top of the concretion....What do you usually find inside the concretions? Cheers Steve... And Welcome if your a New Member...
Shamalama
Almost looks crabby. Bullsnake
It looks like a brachiopod, broken/worn, revealing some internal structure. Steve
Fossildude19
I agree with Steve - looks like a brachiopod. Shamalama
After a second look I agree, likely a brachiopod that has had external shell eroded away leaving the infilled rock and whatever internal structures were embedded in it. -Dave __________________________________________________ Geologists on the whole are inconsistent drivers.
