Insect? Concretion?

Recommended Posts

I recently found this fossil in Topeka, Ks where I normally hunt concretions. To me it looks like a concretion except for what appears to be an insect on the top of it. The only preparing I've done to it is soak it in soapy water and use a toothbrush to get the dried dirt off of it so see what I had. Any thoughts as to whether or not it's indeed an insect would be appreciated. Thanks, MJ

I think that may be mineral staining on top of the concretion....What do you usually find inside the concretions?

Almost looks crabby. Where did you find it?

I agree with Steve - looks like a brachiopod.

After a second look I agree, likely a brachiopod that has had external shell eroded away leaving the infilled rock and whatever internal structures were embedded in it.
