lmacfadden
Found this today March 28, 2013, near Rock Glen, Ontario, at the Ausable River, high up on the river bank where some new clay had washeddown. It was in the clay about 6-8 feet above the water level. It measures approximately 6" long by 3" wide and weighs about 2 pounds... What could this be?? Here are some closer details ~Lise MacFadden - Arkona, Ontario, Canada
Auspex
It is possible that it is a weathered cephalopod. 1 "There has been an alarming increase in the number of things I know nothing about." - Ashleigh Ellwood Brilliant “Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.” - Thomas Henry Huxley >Paleontology is an evolving science. >May your wonders never cease! TMNH
very bady weathered orthrocone cephalopod;the indented circular lines are the chamber devisions. Yes and you can see the end of the siphuncle (tube running much of the length of the shell) in pictures 2 and 3.

Auspex
... I guess this is one for the rock pile... I dunno 'bout that; it's a big one, and is demonstrates the location of the siphuncle. 1 "There has been an alarming increase in the number of things I know nothing about." - Ashleigh Ellwood Brilliant “Try to learn something about everything and everything about something.” - Thomas Henry Huxley >Paleontology is an evolving science. >May your wonders never cease! Indy
Thanks for replying! I guess this is one for the rock pile... Many of us have fossils in our collection which are not "trophies" They are "memory" fossils ... Fossils that bring back fond memories of when we found them and wondered what they might represent or fossils we simply find eye appealing. Teres
Being "badly weathered" doesn't mean it's a "bad" fossil!

PRAIRIEBUDDA
Very nice find, one that actually stirs one's imagination, not only would I hang on to it, but I would mount it on a hardwood base and display it too. Congrats on such a nice find.
