Alas, Poor Yoruk...

I just acquired this old reproduction Hesperornis skull to go with the substantial number of bones (from four individuals) I have picked-up over the past several months. The skeletal elements, in total comprising maybe 30% of a composit bird, require quite a bit of preparation to make them presentable (they are all from S. W. South Dakota (Pierre Shale), and are heavily crystallized). Eventually, they should make a pretty impressive mount :)

Chas, as Jim stated earlier--that does sound cool!....I was out earlier in the week trying to photograph the birds in the neighborhood-new project with modest results thus far. Got some cranes and storks and raptors but would have been nice to see something large with a beak with teeth! Keep us posted. Regards, Chris

I'll be saving up for a while before I can have the fossil material prepped; I'm financially tapped-out from acquiring it (who could pass up Hesperornis material?).

Very Cool Chas, looked up the bird and was fascinated as I read about it. Thanks for posting this and I too can't wait to see the final result.

Thanks all! I really never thought I'd ever have the opportunity to have something like this :D

I know I have multiple leg and foot bones (more than enough), a sternum, a synsacrum, some neck verts, and other as-yet unknown bits. At this point I envision a panel mount, but preparation beyond my abilities is required (and is currently not in the budget).

Great birdskull,

Now I understand why you are in love with birdfossils!

Must be hard to find birdfossils.

Congrets with that beauty :)

I found some bones in a crack filled with deposits of perhaps pleistoceen age. Somebody told be there could be birdbones (Galliformes?) among them.

How can I tell they are birdbones?

Many of the bones in a bird's skeleton are distinctive; see here what I mean: LINK

You can post pictures to the Forum, if you wish :)

  • 1 month later...

Have any updates for us Auspex?

Since last we spoke, I have had to buy a new air conditioner and furnace for the store, and a new transmission for the van...these expenditures came to about 50% of my annual take-home pay :( . As for the fossils, the best I can say is that they are safe and stable. It will be a while before anything else can be done.
