donckey
Hi Napoleon, Did you find this flint on farm land? It looks a little bit like Meusnes-silex (France) which was often used to make "gunflints" (pierres à fusil). It is difficult to tell from your pictures if your flint really is Meusnes-silex or a real gunflint. I do miss (or see) some distinctive features (like the retouche) which could make a 100% identification. In the scan you see some gunflint of me found in Belgium, shown in an article about gunflints ( "Gunflints", tweehonderd jaar gespecialiseerde vuursteenbewerking uit historische tijden, A.M. Wouters, APAN Extern 195/1996/5) Free translated: "Gunflints" twohundred years of specialised flint modification from historical times. In this drawings you can see the retouche characteristic for gunflints in western Europe. I had a quick look for the original artifacts but could not find them yet, to many boxes When I find them I will add some pictures of those gunflints. Not very many people do recognise gunflints and they are so often mistaken for small scrapers, so compliments for thinking of this possibility Peter Edited May 17, 2013 by donckey
