I'm quite an amateur at this, but I found two interesting looking pieces near Las Vegas. One may be a tooth.. or just an oddly shaped rock. The other looks like petrified wood due to the rings. I hope the pics are clear enough. I measured the "fossil" as 2" x 1.5 inches (small). What do you guys think?

"fossil":

Also, does anyone know of any good fossil sites in AZ, NV (especially the Las Vegas area), UT or southern CA?

Not sure about the pics, but I know that CA, NV and UT have fantastic collecting sites. STH is famous! UT has trilobite collecting pay sites. A little bit of 'Googling' and your there.

Cindy,

They look more geologic than biologic in origin, to me. :unsure:

But I have been known to be wrong before, and probably will be again. :blush:

I also took the liberty of lightening your pics up a bit with PhotoScape.

They look like thin bedding preserved within concretions.

The curved bedding in the last two remind me of stromatolites.

Context is critical.

I agree, but I like them a lot. Next time I go to Vegas, I need to get out of Vegas...but its so hard ;)
