Hi all. I just wanted to share a few photos from my camping trip over the weekend. As usual, the Carlile Shale. :D (I love this place!)

post-11220-0-28069000-1372204497_thumb.jpg

My find of the trip was this excellent placenticeras pseudoplacenta....

post-11220-0-97478000-1372204505_thumb.jpg

...along with this beautifully weathered prionocyclus hyatti...

post-11220-0-10607100-1372204504_thumb.jpg

...and a few small nodules (prepped by mother nature)...

post-11220-0-52170400-1372204502_thumb.jpg

...she sure does a wonderful job. :)

Trips like these always leave me anxious to get back!

Best of luck to you all...happy hunting.

Two "love smileys"? Awesome! Thanks Auspex and FossilDude.

Dan, a placenticeras of that size and quality had eluded me for way too long. So, for me, it was indeed a spectacular find.

I do love "my" desert, Roz. It has given me the opportunity, not only to collect wonderful fossils, but a personal study of a snapshot of the Late Cretaceous.

Your appreciation for what I find so amazing is great! Thank you!

It is amazing what roaming the desert will bring you. An ocean (though, be it, ancient) in the desert? Marvelous!

Looks like a great site, no wonder you are addicted to it!

Nice panorama, what did you use to take that?

btw what sort of weather are you getting there, hot? just pleasant? Is that a thundercloud in the background?

We are getting a lot of rain here lately - late June  - I'm getting tired of it and want to get back to my fav. site!!

Wrangellian, it is HOT!!! Yesterday we hit 102 :o (but at least I'm not in Phoenix). Tends to be a bit cooler away from the city but not by much. We are badly in need of rain.

For the panoramas, I use the photo stitch program: PTGui.

And yes, Ludwigia, peace, quiet and fossils make for a nice escape. :)

Mike, ABQ sounds no worse than TX. Maybe we can do a trip swap on weekends in the near future (or maybe cooler climes). Your only trouble at this end will be gettin' all them bigguns home!

Yikes.. I'd wish I could be there to help you collect but I don't think I can handle those temps. Do all your collecting in the early morning or evening? I think we got some of the rain that you should have got this past month, but now they say this year's heat wave is starting, and it is getting warmer - it was pretty muggy yesterday (can't work in that either)...

PTGui, I'll have to look into that one, I've tried Microsoft Ice and it works sometimes but it's not failsafe.

Yep you are very fortunate..I remember desert finds being pretty neat. You can actually see a lot of the geology without all the bushes and trees covering everything up! But my gosh, watching the temps in the national weather forecasts of late about 100F which is on the normal side and even110+F, but then 128F forecasts in places like Furnace creek, CA that's just scary dangerous..Be safe! Thanks for showing the finds and the panorama shot! Regards, Chris

Wrangellian, PTGui is a pretty cool program and I think you will enjoy it. And yes, midday is lunch and rest. Collect all morning and evening.

Plantguy, the desert and it's geology are amazing. Pack lots of water and bring your own shade (unless you are fortunate enough to find a lone juniper to crawl under :)).

It should cool off by November.

  • 2 weeks later...

November! Quite a different climate than here...

That's a bit exaggerated ;). Fall is very short though.

Fall is short here too and it generally equates to the month of October. Sometimes October is lovely for collecting and sometimes even winters are mild and a few days can be put it, but usually Nov to Feb or Mar are a writeoff. I'm sure your collecting season is longer!

A dry climate with little moisture lends the opportunity of year round adventures. It becomes more a tolerance of temperature, rather than elements...

...it's, very much, a wonderland in it's own right. :)

And speaking of this wonderland, I spent last Friday and Saturday cruisin' the Carlile shale.

Back to the Puerco...
