2 Inch Mammal Tooth Fragment

6 posts in this topic

Mastodon has been guessed by fossil friends but I am not that comfortable with growth rings and pattern on the broken edges. I can think of 2 other possibilities, but will leave the identifying to others.

Thanks for the Help SS

I'm am by far no expert, but it could be a gomphothere (elephant) tooth fragment.

It had a trunk I bet. I found another chunk of mastodon the other day.

I have a lot of Mastodon including a number of complete teeth. I can not find something comparable to those circular growth lines going either way (horizontal or vertical) on my Mastodon samples.

If you have some photos , please post.

I did find some similar looking growth lines on this 3.5 inch fossil tooth fragment found last March.

Part of the root of mastodon or gomphothere.

Thanks to all for the identification. I had thought toothed whale, but consensus is mastodon. SS
