Shellseeker
Mastodon has been guessed by fossil friends but I am not that comfortable with growth rings and pattern on the broken edges. I can think of 2 other possibilities, but will leave the identifying to others. wibrown
I'm am by far no expert, but it could be a gomphothere (elephant) tooth fragment.
RickNC
It had a trunk I bet. I found another chunk of mastodon the other day.
Shellseeker
I have a lot of Mastodon including a number of complete teeth. I can not find something comparable to those circular growth lines going either way (horizontal or vertical) on my Mastodon samples. If you have some photos , please post. I did find some similar looking growth lines on this 3.5 inch fossil tooth fragment found last March. Shellseeker
Thanks to all for the identification. I had thought toothed whale, but consensus is mastodon.
