Shark Tooth Island(Wilmington)

Recommended Posts

Has anyone on here made any trips to Shark Tooth Island?

I've not been but I'm planning on going in the next month or two... Any tips on how to find any teeth or other fossils here? I'm new to fossil hunting in general, not sure on what all I should bring. I'll be making a floating sifter and bringing a shovel...I'm assuming a hammer and small pickaxe would be useful as well?

I have been there a few time, I would dig down a ways and then sift for the teeth. Most surface collecting is picked over.

I went there last week and agree the surface hunting is tough. Spent two hours and ended up with one tooth. Started out as a fishing trip so did not have my sifter with me. Would go back again, it does have potential.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try sifting when I make my way out there

I live beside Ft. Fisher at Kure Beach. Where is Sharks Teeth Island?

Thanks,

Becky

Off of River Road Park. Grab a kayak and paddle over. Nice paddle if nothing else.

The Island is also the only known surface exposure of the Paleocene Baldhead Shoals Formation. It doesn't have shark teeth though.
