It has been a long time since it rained enough to inhibit collecting ammonites out in the Puerco...

 

...so south of the Puerco it is. :D

 

The southern edge of the Albuquerque Basin is composed of middle Miocene outcrops...

...I headed there for a few hours of hiking. I found many tid-bits of white mammal bone early on in my adventure. I followed a small "trail" of shards up the hill to find this piece of a camel jaw...

...followed by this (I think :blink: ) small piece of antler.

Poor guy...can't collect ammonites so forced to collect mammal fossils.

What a scenic area. I like the way you followed the shards. Great find. Perhaps we aren't fossil hunters as much as fossil sleuths.

Wow, you have some incredible sites in NM to collect at. Nice specimens! I wish we had isolated areas like this in VA. Really makes me want to move.

...I found a few scraps of mammal bone as I wandered, along with this strangeness...

...I'm not sure what it is, but there was quite a bit of it in one concentrated spot.

Back up a gully behind me, I heard @NMFOSSILS99 give a holler. As I rounded the corner, I could see why...

...he had found some Gomphothere parts in a block...

...I noticed some chisel marks. The NMMNH collected a Gomphothere out here many years ago and left a large block behind...I think this is that block. Chris was pretty excited and it is easy to understand why...good times.
