busyeagle Posted September 18, 2013 Share Posted September 18, 2013 Made our first trip to Pine Cliff thanks to the information graciously shared by Aurora. It was a solid walk to get to the collecting area, but pretty, and the site itself was lot's of fun. Once we got the hang of spotting teeth in the mud, we were pleasantly surprised by the number of specimens waiting to be collected. The condition of most of the teeth left something to be desired, especially of the great whites, but we did manage to come back with a few nice ones. I really enjoyed the site as well as the long walk. If you are interested, you can see my finds in the North Carolina forum under "Trip To Aurora Fossil Festival" (it is the pic where I refer to the Cherry Point location, as I assumed I was closer to Cherry Point then Pine Cliffs after the healthy walk). I grew up in that area and have many many fond memories of Pine Cliffs (not just fossiling!!!) Spent many a Friday night there after home football games. One of the best finds I have from there is a Pleistocene beaver jaw (lower) with all but one of the teeth. It is a long walk, but especially after a storm, and when you have low water you can find some very nice stuff. Looked like you had a similarly pleasant and successful experience. I couldn't make it down to the Fossil Festival this year, but it's always a good time. However any place along the way you see gravel on the beach, stop and look.
