collector
I found this partial weathered ammonite on the shore of Hemlock lake, one of the lesser Finger lakes of New York State years ago. It is 4.5 cm at the widest. I am assuming because of the condition that it is not possible to id. I sure couldn't by looking though an article on NY ammonites. Is the pattern on it pyrolusite dendrites and with the pink color could it be pink quartz that is the replacement mineral? The first picture is dry. The others I wet it to help show the pattern. Fossildude19
This is very unusual preservation. I've not seen anything like this. Unfortunately, I know very little about Devonian ammonoids, so I can't help. The marks do not look like dendrites I've seen, but that could be that they have formed more deeply in the rock. Hope one of the local experts will chime in on this one. Thanks for posting this. ckmerlin
Thats an interesting specimen you could try a scratch test (Mohs scale of hardness) on a small area to see if its quartz thats if you dont mind making a small scratch , the markings could be dendrites as Tim says formed more deeply in the rock but without having the specimen in hand its bit hard to say but very interesting thanks for posting regards Chris "A man who stares at a rock must have a lot on his mind... or nothing at all'
collector
Thank you for the replies. I saw some pictures online of some ammonites with very lacy looking suture lines that looked similar in some of the design but make no sense in where they are radiating from on this one. I have another more complete ammonite found on the same lake but where in this house is it hiding. It doesn't have the pattern and is more cream colored and has some ribs radiating out if my memory serves me right. I will have to look some more. Terry Dactyll
If the shell was completely worn away and the fossil is a calcitic cast of the interior near the mouth of the ammonite they form patterns very similar to sutures but go a bit random as you move away... These should be consistent...Maybe some pathological deformity with the specimen or as you say dendrites... Cheers Steve... And Welcome if your a New Member...
