autographcollector11
These were both found on the shore of Lake Michigan in Illinois. They are chain coral. From what I have read, chain coral is rare from Lake Michigan. I have seen pieces sell for about $50. Are these really rare? If so-why? Thanks
Bev
My understanding is that Chain Coral, Halysites Coral, is not rare in and of itself. But it is a rare find from certain locations. Congratulations on your find! 1 The more I learn, I realize the less I know. Auspex
... I have seen pieces sell for about $50... Seriously? I think that decimal point is way too far to the right. PennyT.
All I find at the Michigan dunes are crinoid bits and bobs so that "necklace" looks pretty nice to me.

FossilDAWG
Hi @Billtn61, and welcome to the Forum Chain corals like yours (Catenipora or Halysites if Silurian, which the location suggests) are quite attractive, but pretty common. BTW everyone, this thread is from 10 years ago, so don't expect many of the original participants to comment. Don
