PRK,

Yes, LACM used to go to a site called "Corkscrew Hill" in English; "Loma del Tirabuzon" in Spanish near Santa Rosalia. Shelton Applegate described the site in his 1978 article, "Phyletic Studies: Part 1: Tiger Sharks. I have seen a partial tooth from there that would have been around 2 inches when it was complete.

Jess

Back when I worked at LACM, way back in the pleistocene, I can remember them sending a reconacence party down to baja calif for fossil sh th. I believe it was around Santa Rosario somewhere . And I can remember seeing the trays of teeth they brought back. along with MANY other sweet pliocene teeth and other vertebrate fossils. I remember specifically the eye popping, at least a dozen, giant hemipristis. ALL were that beautiful yellowish color and, close to or over, two inches each. To this day I can still see those magnificent teeth when I close my eyes. Never saw them again. And who knows where they went.

When I came looking for this thread, you know I had good news.  I did not realize how very rare Hemipristis serra teeth over 2 inches actually were.

A good friend waxed eloquently about the fantastic finds at this new Bone  Valley creek site he had discovered and suggested we would do well. On the 2nd shovel of the day, a black leaf turned out to be a Hemi...

SieveHemi.JPG.df135085d7a61d7e219ca2b49cc5898f.JPG

It was a Large Hemi, 2.05 inches.

and colorful.

A little bruised, but this one seems to confirm Bone Valley large Hemipristic teeth with yellow or golden colors.. :megdance::yay-smiley-1::megdance:

I am really fortunate to have many good friends.

Here is my entry. from Pliocene sediments in Craven County N.C. 2.03 inches long; 1.81 inch wide. It's wider than most of the larger hemi's I have found are long.

@jcbshark I had forgotten about this thread. Obviously (from your post about Jacks tooth) you did too.

2 inchers are obviously very rare shown by the very small handful posted here that actually make that magical mark

Love Hemis!  One of my all time favourite species for sure.  Bone Valley, FL and Lee Creek, NC seem to have the best odds of hitting the magical 2" mark.  But like others were saying anything 1.75+" is a real monster of a Hemi.  I am lucky enough to own one 2" Lee Creek Hemi and about 15-20 1.75"+ Bone Valley Hemis (biggest BV is 1.96").

Must have been one scary shark that's for sure!

Hi GreatWhiteMac,

I have seen a couple of Venice Beach Hemipristis at around  1 3/4 inches so someone might have a 2-incher from there too.  In the old days collectors found some large Hemopristis around Cabo San Lucas, Mexico too.  You can't legally export fossils from there anymore (Mexico started cracking down on that in the 90's) but back in the 60's and 70's (and maybe earlier) some rockhounds brought back teeth from there.

Nice tooth.  Plus it looks like the shark bit into the tooth when shedding it.

It has been 4 years, so I thought I would revive this topic to see if any other big Hemipristis have been found. I'm including a pic of the largest one I have ever seen. Unfortunately, I did not find it; but I was present when it was found at the Lee Creek mine.
