My Latest Coral Display

Last week I displayed some of my big horn corals in life position by "sticking" them in a piece of wood. I wanted to use a natural rock base but the display I think would have been too heavy. This time a made a display using smaller horn corals (Sterolasma) and placing them in a piece of hard shale. The piece of shale is very solid and it has a couple Sterolasmas on it as well as a couple of brachiopods (Pseudoatrypa), bryozoans, crinoid stems, and a trilobite head. It turned out nice and each hole I drilled into the shale custom fits each individual coral.

Thanks for lookig!

Thanks. I have a display case with a shelf of corals and some of these specimens were just lying there. Now this display gives them a whole different look that makes more sense.

Mikey;

A great "living display." Congratulations! The natural base makes them come "alive." Reminds me they once were more than fossils but living creatures. Not just art, this display treats them with respect. Love to see more of your "out of the box" fossil displays. They're amazing. Photography is great too. Keep up the good work and best wishes.

Thanks Tim! I had this piece of shale sitting on the work bench and I was gonna trim it down and clean up the corals and brachs in it. It has a flat bottom and it's a solid piece so I thought it might be better as a display for some corals.

Mike, it doesn't weigh that much and it fits nicely on the coral shelf in my display case.

That is a very good display, I collect horn corals from beaches on the Great Lakes. The are large but less detailed than yours. Even when I find them in their initial clay deposits they are rounded.
