MarcoSr
Hopefully I will be able to post my finds before my vacation is over. I still have half a box of matrix from Doren to go through plus I need to photograph the specimens from the previous batches of matrix that Sacha, jcbshark, and obsessed1 sent me. John Sounds like you have a lot of pictures to take. I'm curious what you found in Kevin's matrix and really looking forward to that post and all of the other posts. MarcoSr
Wow, I am so glad everyone is finding good stuff in the matrix I collected... "IT MAKES A PAPA PROUD"! Some interesting teeth, you take such great photos Marco. It is really nice to see these things without a 20x loupe stuck in one eye (the only way I can see them). I do make the best effort to seek out the best areas to collect, and it shows. Thanks for posting. If you want more, I got it. Doren Doren Thank you again for the matrix. It was really good with lots of nice shark, ray and fish teeth. Marco Sr. "Any day that you can fossil hunt is a great day." MarcoSr
Great resource Marco! I've been trying to ID a couple cups I have full of these small teeth and I might try and organize them next time I have a min. You might also check out elasmo at the below link for id help. MarcoSr
After washing the matrix for the first time in hot water and then searching the residue, I broke down the matrix a second time using hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide broke down the small hard pieces of matrix that came from the heart of the bone bed. I was really surprised by the number of additional teeth after the second breakdown. Below are some of the nicer teeth from the second breakdown. I found a small terrestrial mammal tooth. Note that you can find translucent teeth in the matrix also. RichW9090
Small mammal tooth looks like a carnivore. Can you get a better shot of the occlusal surface, and tell me the length? Great teeth and photography! The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
MarcoSr
Small mammal tooth looks like a carnivore. Can you get a better shot of the occlusal surface, and tell me the length? Great teeth and photography! Rich This tooth is very small, .75 mm in length. This tooth is also very fragile. Because of it being so fragile I was afraid to try to position it in clay or wax to get a good occlusal view. So I had to shoot the occlusal view from an angle. Also because of the fact that the tooth is white I had to shoot the pictures with low lighting in order to get better detail of the tooth. The fact that the tooth is white may mean that it is a modern contaminant. However there are a lot of white teeth in this fauna. Hopefully these pictures will give you a better idea of what this tooth really looks like. John Hamilton found a small jaw section, 4.7mm, with a single tooth, from the same batch of matrix from Doren. Hopefully he will post it. caldigger
Marco, did you ever get a positive ID on this mammal tooth? I am curious what the tooth I found (similar, but larger) belongs to. I am sure this is not modern as it was found within solidified matrix. If anyone can recognize it, I would appreciate some sort of ID. Some of the pictures didn't turn out so well. If you need better pics I can accommodate. siteseer
That's one of the smallest apparent land mammal teeth I've seen from the STH bonebed. It looks like it has a broken-off cusp that wore down more in life. I'm thinking an upper first molar of a mustelid - not sure. It would interesting to see more comments on this one. caldigger
Well that would make sense if its from a type of otter coming from an inland sea. Finding some cool stuff lately. Thanks. Edited November 11, 2014 by caldigger
