Pagurus
I'm still looking through an interesting bag of Waldrip formation gravel that FF member kauffy sent, and having a fine time hunting for micros. These are a few I've found so far. I don't have any ID's yet, so if you know what they are I'd be glad to hear from you. These photos were all taken with a Digital Blue QX5 microscope. This is marketed as a toy, and it has many drawbacks, but it's better than I expected. It's a camera with LED lights and three objective lenses as well as a roughly-focusing movable stage. I got mine free at our local landfill. It doesn't work with Windows 7 (which is probably why someone got rid of it) but I have no trouble with Windows XP. The software has a "snapshot" option which makes it easy to take photos. Besides the incompatability with Windows 7 and the rough focus, I'm not happy with the small resolution of the jpeg files. For me, though, the price was right. I wouldn't recommend buying it at list price but I've seen them on ebay for around 20 dollars, which seems like a good deal, and something that would be fun for kids to use. 1. Crinoid bits - 2. MarcoSr
Really nice photos. That microscope is definitely a very low cost option for nice photos. I'm finding similar specimens in the matrix that I received from kauffy also. I can recognize the Crinoid pieces and Bryozoans in the matrix but really can't identify them any further. Pagurus
Thanks, Marco. I'd like to get a better scope one of these days, but this seems good enough for now. Merry Micro Christmas. Pagurus
Your Modern Seed?? looks to be a Platycrinites stem segment Thank you! It looks so unlike the others I wasn't sure it could be crinoid. Thanks. Ok, maybe seed was a bad idea but at least I didn't insist it was an egg. I appreciate you setting me straight. Fossildude19
Nice Photos, Mike! Not too shabby for a freebie. Thanks for posting your finds. Neat to see them.
