AnjiorArmando
We found a couple of interesting pieces west of Salton Sea and east of Anza Borrego does anyone know from what era these can be from and what they might be? Thanks for the information We believe this is Petrified Wood Specimen 1 Specimen 2 Specimen 3, looks like a petrified plant of sort, not sure what. We think a cactus, because of the holes Specimen 4 we think might be coral but have no idea what type, all of these pieces were found around each other Thanks for the information. calhounensis
Welcome to the forum. I think you are correct, the first three specimens do appear to be petrified wood. I especially like the third specimen. As far as genus or species I'm clueless, maybe someone with more knowledge will see this and point you in the right direction. A little research turned up some interesting reading on the Salton Sea/Anza Borrego area. http://www.fossilsites.com/STATES/CA.HTM This site gives some details on what can be commonly found and an age. To my knowledge most petrified wood is generally Miocene in age, but that is just an assumption, take it with a grain of salt. Salton Sea seems to be known for its foraminiferas, if you are into amoebas that might be something to look into in the future. I hope someone will come along and give you some more definite ID's, thanks for sharing your finds. Daniel
Taogan
Can't tell you the era, but it's all fossil wood. Some nice pieces in there.

lissa318
I love petrified wood! One of the first things I ever found was a piece of petrified palm on the beach. Congrats on some nice pieces!
AnjiorArmando
It seems that there is a petrified forest somewhere in the salton sea area, does anyone have any information on the age and the types of wood that we might be finding in this area? Thanks again for the info.
lissa318
I found that this was helpful to me when I first started to learn my area... Not seeing Salton Sea actually listed on here but may still help? When googling a couple different areas were mentioned but not sure if near you or not... If you have a local museum they will probably be able to tell you what is common in the area and may even have an area just dedicated to what is found there. Hope this helped. Scylla
It seems that there is a petrified forest somewhere in the salton sea area, does anyone have any information on the age and the types of wood that we might be finding in this area? Thanks again for the info. Supposedly it is 12 miles south of Travertine Rock. Another area is south of the border.
AnjiorArmando
Thanks a bunch for the responses. We are going to try a little southwest of where we were originally looking, seems that, that is appx. 12 miles south of the travertine Rock, (Thanks Scylla) , I think we are close. Will be keeping in touch with what we find. Thanks again everyone. Edited January 27, 2014 by AnjiorArmando
