It's about 1.5 inches and looks a little like a screw.

Possibly an eroded crinoid stem.

Does it look like the first few pictures HERE?

OMG Rich, you took the "words" right out of my mouth with the "Archimedes" screw thing. I know nothing about them other than what I've learned here on TFF, but it was the first thing I thought of by the description of "screw" like thing. A picture will certainly clear up the mystery.
