What Is This Object In Coal?

I was wondering what this is! it looks like a piece of bark, with a pickle-like skin. It kind of resembles some kind of slug, as there's some symmetry. What I don't understand is why it hasn't coalified like the rest of the coal around it? It readily came out of the piece of coal, and the coal was compressed around it.

I broke it in half (I was so curious as to what it would look like inside), and it's like stone.

Thanks!

My guess would be that it is an isolated piece of lignite that, perhaps due to impurities, did not become coal.
