I've taken several more photos of this specimen, will upload them later tonight.

Here is several views of that white mineralized material that reminds me of replaced callagen...

Just wondering why it looks like the material is on a geosynthetic layer. is this a leach pad or slag impoundment?

It's hard to remember why you drained the swamp when your surrounded by alligators.

The more I look, the less I think it is biological. There is just no pattern to it.

Hey squali, sir there's not an answer that i can provide for that question. I can assure you though that this specimen certainly isn't man made and was recovered from a Late Cretaceous formation which is either Campanian or Maastrichtian. There's nothing geosynthetic anywhere around this location. The material had already eroded out of the formation and was still laying on some of the formation itself, but i have no doubts about it coming directly from the layer i speak of, i'd actually cleaned it before photographing, and a microscopic analysis would sshow it to still have plenty Cretaceous sediment all in it. This stuff is typical of things that come from that certain layer.....as far as it being somewhat replaced w/ marcasite, and the red iron staining from being in contact w/ a layer which contacts the find layer.

Sir, i can confirm it's biological affinity. There is a patternation to the specimen but it's hard to make out because (as i presume), after the material had eroded from the layer, it had weathered for awhile before i came along and recovered it. I know it's hard to see, because of weathering, but if you look closely @ the following photo, there is a a regular pattern present.

looks a lot like the sediment layers we have here in Wisconsin from glaciers.

Is there a pic you could post for a comparison?

Also, this material is no doubt coalified....so to speak...

A couple more views of the white mineralized material, showing it present on the surface and in cross-section between the polygonal shapes.

You are making want to drive down and see this thing in person, as looking at it over and over I keep seeing different things. Any chance a cross section can be provided with out destroying the subject?

It would be nice if i could show a cut cross-section view.....man that would look strange i bet. :)

Come on sir! I wish somebody would come and look at it! :) never in my life saw anything like this...

Polygon shapes more easily detectable on this surface side.

Opposite surface side. Perhaps ventral view.

The only strange protrusion detectable on the specimen.

Two more views of the protrusion, this "may" be an identification key.

A strange shape, here you can clearly see the white mineralized material used to encase the center shape...so to speak.....weird!

I was just thinking white oak tree bark that has weathered but still thinking.

attachicon.gifwhiteoak.jpg

A well thought out assertion sir. If i could show a scale w/ this...it's small dark shapes...3/16 or smaller., about the only bark that it has a erie resemblance to that i have thought of is wollemi.nobilis, but that's a pretty out there asseration, so i haven't said much about it...

Here, it looks like i can make out a stacked pattern running at a low angle, upwards (in this shot) from right to left...strange...
