i bought this piece a while ago, it was listed as "amber" but is actually copal. there are a lot of insects in the piece including an ant, some weird fly-like insects, another weird insect, some kind of roach, etc. it was quite hard, and was about NZ$7. i don't know what kind of copal it is and i am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this.

Possibly Columbian?

I've seen copal from Indonesia, Columbia, Mexico and Madagascar. Your's looks like it's from Madagascar or Columbia, in that order. But, if it's harder than usual, it could be Columbian. Either way, both are usually loaded with inclusions. I've bought all of my copal from this store, prices are very reasonable and it's rough copal from Columbia. He had a lot on ebay too. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CDYQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.goldminecoinsandrelics.com%2F&ei=SDZJU-a4MOTuyAGQ4YHQDw&usg=AFQjCNHEXnRoYgNliZPize510eNjUC3YIg&sig2=bQ_NWo74aardRgAmAQm1zA&bvm=bv.64542518,d.aWc

I'm still looking for an honest supplier in rough Dominican amber and have bought some very nice Baltic amber from Vermiculosus. I may have a new contact for the Dominican. PM me if you're interested or want to share supplier info. ;)
