Planning On Going To The Aquia On Thursday, What To Expect?

I have checked the tides for the Aquia and found them favorable. But apparently there will be some freezing and thawing Wednesday night. Because of that I'm gonna keep clear of the cliffs. Would the freezing and thawing help refresh the river with fossils because of the erosion that is bound to take place? Just a little curious.

Josh, it's unlikely that a quick freeze and thaw will produce much if any new erosion. The cliffs need a deeper/longer period to freeze so that when they thaw there is more erosion. Rain storms tend to cause some erosion, but usually it's the stuff closer to the top of the cliffs like the hard clays, top soil, and trees that come down and not the better fossil material.

Daryl.

I agree with Daryl in that not much fresh erosion will occur from this cold snap.

One thing that all collectors at Purse and other public properties should be aware of is that spring turkey season opens on Friday and lasts for about 4 weeks. Hunters will be in the woods before daylight and can hunt until noon. During this time of year I always go in early enough to be at the river well before daylight and stay until well after the noon closing of hunting. I also always have my flashlight on while I walk in.

Freeze thaw of 1 night won't help if it even freezes around the cliffs which it likely won't since the water temp is in the 50s and keeps temps up around the river. What should help is this blow. Supposed to stay hard North for another day or so and ease up switch north east on Thurs which will help you by creating a dead zone of air around the cliffs and a calmer river. Water will probably still be a mess though from the rain but could be a good day though if tide cooperates. I'd go if I had the chance.

We had a big rainstorm yesterday which (I think) hit up there too, which could cause some erosion up there. But the only way to know is to find out.
