Platyceras Dumosum

Recommended Posts

Was visiting a quarry in NW Ohio two weeks ago, and came across this gastropod. It's about 2" X 1.5" Had to do some research to identify it. Saw that not too many Platyceras dumosums have been discussed/presented on TFF.

It's completely pyritized. Inside and out post-7762-0-26013300-1397779093_thumb.jpg

Here's a drawing of how they're thought to have looked

It also has some non-pyritized bryozoans (I think?) attached to the coil.

How does this occur?

This is a great example! They look like something from the home planet of the Clingons :)

I would guess that the snail's shell is chemically different from the bryozoan's structure, with the latter unlikely to pyritize.

Excellent specimen. I have a NY specimen myself, but it is only a partial and not nearly so pretty.

  • 6 years later...

I just completed prepping another of the pyrite Platyceras. Came from the same area as the others but was found in the last few years and has been sitting, waiting to be prepped. It's a bit bigger than a golf ball, as are the previous two.
