Mazon Creek Il Fossil Mystery

I got out to the Braidwood fauna area last week. I found this half nodule just as it was and wondering what this is? Bark impression? I definitely found a lot of petrified wood and plant stuff where I went so thought the bark idea. But haven't seen anything like this before...

I think it might be the impressions from the psaronius (tree fern) root mantle.

It was referred to as stigmarioides here. (also spelled stigmaroides and stigmariodes occassionally)

Hopefully, some with more expertise might also weigh in.

Nice bunch of ferns and wood! I've found a lot of petrified wood in a Braidwood area as well. I've been trying to determine which ones of mine might be tree fern and which ones seed fern without a lot of luck.
