In The Footsteps Of Sternberg

...as I climbed the slopes back to camp, I saw two coyote pups slinking through the sage brush to avoid my attention (as well as my camera lens :( )...and then noticed this stump...

...and with that, I made the decision to pack up camp and head back to the Puerco. Impatience...you win. :D

Fantastic landscape. though. Are you allowed to remove any pet wood from the area or is it strictly prohibited? You could make some nice slices out of that palm wood.

Yes it is...unlike anything else I have roamed.

You are...I believe it is 25 lbs. per year...how they came up with that, ya got me. I have a few pieces of palm that I have hauled around for a bit...hung onto them for that exact reason.

I need to move to New Mexico . . .

Visit first...grass isn't very green in the desert. :)

Is that a Ford Exploder you've got? That's what I use.. same color too!

It is, and I love it..."skinny" and powerful...need that for adventuring. :D

Same here in Bakersfield, everything is brown almost year round!

Pretty cool spot Mike. If anything i would say the desert heat probably played a big role in your impatience. It seems as though digging would be your best option, due to the harsh elements breaking down any good vertebrate materials. But i guess it's like trying to find a needle in a field of hay.

  • 9 months later...

Some friends of mine, Mike and Leslie, sent me some pictures of some very cool fossils they discovered while out hiking the Late Cretaceous (Campanian) badlands of the San Juan Basin... a few weeks ago, we went and collected them. :)

The first was an amazing turtle from a place we call "Valley of the Little People"...

Way cool! Your friends must be professionals if you're toting things like that out, eh? Or do you need permission at all? Or are you donating them to the museum?

I collect under permit (NMMNH). All specimens are curated at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History.

...Your friends must be professionals...

Nope. They are very much like a lot of us here...just love being outside. They do a lot of hiking, camping, flyfishing, and of course, fossil and mineral collecting. :) This trip was actually the first time a professional was not present...my first solo collecting trip!
