Fresh Tonganoxie Sandstone From Buildex

Recommended Posts

Some nice virgin slabs from just above the coa

seam. Now what's the appropriate method for locating/extracting fossils?

Newbie question perhaps, but I know enough to ask ;-)

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Usually, you try to split a slab from the side, using a hammer and cold chisel, or just a chisel ended rock hammer.

It kind of depends on how well bedded the rock is - and how easily it splits.

Usually, I will stand a slab on it's most level side, and have at it trying to split it into different layers.

Fossils I've seen from that area are usually readily apparent. See THIS THREAD.

Let us know if you need further instruction/advice, - post pics and we will try to help.

Good luck ! ;)

Regards,

It'd be nice to hear that the Buildex quarry is still accessible and producing.

It's been many years, but if I remember correctly, the Tonganoxie plants can be oriented at various angles in the sandstone. It's a matter of finding a promising specimen and then hacking out a sufficiently large chunk to be worked on at home. An example:

Thanks for the info. This was a quick look see at the quarry. I'll be getting in touch with them for a true go/ no go regarding extended hunting. Looks like an amazing fishing lake to boot
