Mr_ed
Well lets all google images of Lake superior banded quartz and look at the images.... Your rock is there Bev.. it is called Lake superior agate/quartz. Then let's all google chert or banded and see if we can find one stone that looks like yours. I don't think you will. I am convinced that it is a nice piece of quartz/agate from Lake superior. Cheers Ed

Bev
"I see natural material as mothers true art, and work extensively in conjunction with her to enhance it." Love it! I should walk around and take pictures sometime of all the odd rocks in this yard that the lady before me collected. From the size and oddity of these, I'm guessing there are some "butes! Wrangellian
In any case, sticking to the vernacular, I am betting Bev's rock is agate (but I won't bet much). There is a 'Lake Superior agate', I wonder if this was found in the LS agate territory? Ahem...
Wrangellian
Wow you do have a rock garden, and you've got Maclurites coming out the yinyang! What are these?
PRK
WOW bev, you're right, ya gotta lotta keen rocks! Thanks for showing. I have seen superior agates similar to the one you show in your first post, smaller but up to that size, THAT would be a big'un. However, generally the classic superior agates im used to seeing are usually much smaller but sometimes that size or larger, rare tho. Usually more reddish with white banding, agates that have been tumbled roundish by the transportation inside the glacial moraine left by the sheets of ice that encroached over your area during the infamous ice age Edited June 8, 2014 by PRK
Mr_ed
Wow I thought I had a lot of rock lying around my yard but you got me beat.. Nice collection of goodies.. I would like to get at some of those with a hammer.. Cheers Ed

What are these? post-9628-0-78650300-1402247137.jpg Big rock of brachiopods all through it. Took 2 women to get it home. Walked on it a while an it broke... Bev
The camera was acting up so I reformatted, did some yard work and then walked around the yard and took pics of the ones that didn't turn out. Still one that the camera doesn't like but is a very, very cool rock. Here goes, round two... And on the rock... 3 of what may be agates in the rough, these would be from farmers' rock piles of glacial moraine around here. Maybe a big rough... The more I learn, I realize the less I know.
