Lepidodendrons From Mazon Creek Area

A big surprise for my saturday hunt in one of the coal spoil piles.

I spotted a tiny bit of pattern on some sandstone sticking out. And with a little digging found a bunch of pieces of a cast from the same trunk.

First lepidodendron I've ever found.

Interestingly, from the same hunt, I found the second lepidodendron I've ever found...... inside a concretion.

Also found this.... I think this could be considered my third lepidodendron.

It is a piece with several chunks of wood going different directions. Some of the wood appears to be charcoal-like fusain. Some of the wood has signs of the psaronius material and others appear to be a type of lepidodendron.

..... I keep imagining this like some little floating debris island that eventually gets covered by the sand and rising waters.

Thanks!

I'm finding the last piece I described intriguing... like a floating mat of various pieces of wood debris. I decided to do a higher res flatbed scan to try to see some of it a bit more.

This little thing looked interesting. Is this just a weird piece of wood or a part of a critter?

I'm not sure what that is. It does appear to have some 3D type relief to it in both your 1st large photo and in this one also. Maybe Jack or Rob have seen something like that. I just dont know. Regards, Chris

Pretty cool 'mulch plate'! Congratulations on the nice Lepidodendrons, too.

Hey guys. I am new to the Forum, and I can't seem to post a bigger image. But I found the lepidodendron (scale tree), see my profile picture. It has two branches stemming from the single branch.

The rock is not that big, probably only 2ftX2ft. I thought it was rather unique because of the branching.

I will try to post a bigger image, once I get familiar with the toolbar, it doesn't appear to be allowing me to "browse" for an image to attach.

Anyway, let me know what you guys thinks....I didn't want to start a new topic in the Forum. I found it in Central PA, Bituminous Coal region.

Hi Jmonty,

Welcome to the forum. Your fossil looks very interesting with the branched spit ..... even small.

If you click "more reply options", it will give you the option of adding images.

Looks like there might be more underneath to the right.
