Fossils In New York

Hi everyone,

I'm going to by heading down to New York in a few weeks, and I was wondering if there were any places I could go to do some fossil hunting. I don't care much for mollusc/brachiopod fossils, but would love to find devonian plant fossils in the Gilboa area of Scoharie County.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

You might try along Stryker Road, along the Schoharie creek, and see if you can access some of the rocky areas in the creek on that road.

Or call Nickerson's Family Campground, and see if you could access the creek through their property.

I had a bit of luck there a few years ago.

Also, at the base of MineKill Falls, I found a few loose fossils in the float.

Good Luck!

Regards,

EDIT: Looks like Stryker road is temporarily closed at the moment! Sorry.

I was wondering about mine kill state park. Would it be possible to access the river from there?

It looks like you can, ... from the boat ramp .

Or, if you follow the MineKill from the falls down to Schoharie creek.

You might want to also check out road cuts along Route 28 in West Hurley and Route 23 above Cairo. Isolated small fish parts and freshwater clams can be found there as well. Fossil plants can be found in most marine deposits of the Hamilton Group, though you'll also see plenty of brachiopods, bivalves, cephalopods, and trilobites. Good luck hunting.

Would hiking trails on West Kill Mountain be a good place to collect?

Not sure, as I don't see any rock outcrops in google maps. Have not hiked there myself.

That said, you might check out the Westkill creek as it appears to have lots of rocks exposed.
