Thanks, Erich. If we find that complete Echinothuriid there will be another paper to write. ;)

Congratulations on the find and especially the work it took to take it all the way. Maybe I can pick your brain sometime about all the details you left out.

Hi Coco,

I was able to find 13 complete or nearly complete echinoids in addition to several fragments. :)

It was in june 2010 when John Jagt said "yes, I will"

:)

I'm very happy he did, Alex. Thank you, again, for your assistance. Like I said before, I was surprised that a paleontologist I recognized from the literature on Mosasaurs decided to work on an echinoid project. :fistbump:

JohnJ:  Amazing storyline - your 2009 post about the finds and this post about the new species (first in North America) named after your nephew.  I have a hard time getting pumped up about micros or echinoids.  You and Erich are two peas in a pod when it comes to those treasures. But, your enthusiasm helps to get me going a little regarding micros.

Was this found at Terravista before it was fully developed?

I've found two or three small echinoid-shaped phosphate nodules (or molds) in the Atco/Eagle Ford ("AEF") contact condensed zone (1/2" to 1" diameter).  I have a vague memory that I found a 1/4" diameter possible echinoid similar to yours with less detail, but I can't locate it.  In the AEF contact, I have found that any possible echinoids don't retain any identifiable details (molds?). So, it is indeed very rare for you to find such well preserved echinoids there.

I have some reasonably preserved Mecaster batnensis echinoids found in a zone about 2' to 3' below the AEF contact condensed zone. It is below the baculites zone.

Note that in places, I have seen an upper South Bosque  ("USB" ) condensed zone 2' to 4' below the AEF contact that does NOT have the Ptychodus mortoni, P. atcoensis, and P. latissimus I've found elsewhere in the AEF contact zone.  The shark teeth in this USB zone typically have their roots, where in the AEF contact zone they usually don't have roots due to significant reworking.

In my hunting areas, the color of shark teeth in Travis County changes from mainly red-brown to reddish-pink in the AEF to lt brown & dark brown in the USB with some reddish pink at other sites. Occasionally, contact with rainwater and roots bleach the teeth enamel white or with white streaks. The material in one rich USB condensed zone was full of vert material - Ptychodus, Cretoxyrhina, Xiphactinus, squamata, white shell hash, with many more and smaller phosphate nodules than the AEF contact zone. The Ptychodus there are different:  P. marginalis, P. anonymous, and a "new' species that Shawn Hamm and another peer will be putting out  a report on later this year.  But, I've found no echinoids in that USB condensed zone. I guess they are mainly micros - at least where you had been hunting.

Again, congrats on the amazing finds.

It is really a nice think to find a new species on an area ! Congrats !

Oh ! I just seen that I made a mistake ! I wanted to say : "it is a good thing to find a new species on an area !", and not "a good think". Sorry, but I suppose you understand my thought as a non-American person... (smiley: my thought as a non-American).

All good memories, Lee!  Thanks!  The unique preservation of specimens from that site will yield yet another new species of echinoid (project in progress) described by the same well regarded paleontologist, John Jagt.
