Trilobite Hunt In South Wi - I Need Your Help Please.

I've been reading some posts lately about Trilobite hunting in Wisconsin. And Calebs posts and amazing finds kept popping up.

The reason for my thread is to find out Caleb's old stomping grounds. All of his pictures and posts say SW Wisconsin. I know he liked to hunt the Platteville formation. Can anyone please help me to find some nice Trilo spots around here? I've never found a Trilo yet, .....i know right?! And if you don't want to post it in here for the World to see, please PM me. I'm looking for road cuts, outcroppings, maybe pits, etc.

I also can't just drive out there (3hrs away) and drive around looking for road cuts. Now that i have kids, a house and other responsibilities it's really hard to get away. So this needs to be cut-and-dry, and planned. That is why i am calling on you for help.

Any and all help is very much appreciated.

Thanks, Charlie

Hey Charlie. I like your post here. I was thinking of doing the same thing. I would be inclined to ask Caleb's father Al Scheer on the forum here if he knows any good sites in your area.

Your area is low on fossils. You will have to head west to see some good trilobite bearing rocks near you.

There is a small road cut south of beloit that I read about in a journal that supposedly contains articulated crinoid fossils. I believe it is a Galena outcrop or a Platteville. I have never but I would like to some day.

Here are the coordinates 42.426955,-89.078980

I have attached the aforementioned paper to a message to you

Did take the family to the Yale Bridge road cut in South Beloit. But not two minutes into hunting we had gotten kicked out. The guy was nice. They don't allow collecting there anymore because some young kid decided to climb the cliff and had gotten hurt..... (parents, is it too much to ask to watch your kid near cliffs that could possibly kill them!?!?) Lol....ugh.

Thanks for the info Squalicorax

Charlie,

Sounds like you need to organize an outing with some of the TFF members from Illinois and Wisconsin (or ever further abroad) who might like to meet-up and hit some spots for a group dig like we had for Mazon Creek treasures. Trilos are not likely to be as densely strewn about as siderite nodules and you might need to cover more area at your hunting sites so possibly a huge group might swamp a site and you all might be tripping over each other if you make it a free-for-all. Still it is always fun hunting with others as you get to see more stuff (and usually learn a thing or two). I'll be the first to request seeing photos of any bugs you manage to find.

I'm already in the Trilobite Club having found some in the House Range of the Wheeler Shale in Delta, UT. I have fond and dusty memories of swinging a big hammer at some hot black rock out there. With over 20,000 described species of trilos I really should go hunting again one of these days and add to my paltry bug biodiversity.

Cheers.

Yeah, i hear you Ken. I think most road cuts are small. Like you said, it would be people on top of people. But i guess i can put a feeler out there.

Im jealous that you got to hunt Utah! That's a dream vaca for me.

To really rub it in that was at the end of a trip collecting Green River fish plates and Blue Forest petrified wood in Kemmerer, WY.

A very memorable trip resulting in about 150 pounds split between two roll-aboard pieces of luggage. You should have seen the look on the face of the guy at the X-ray machine in security...

I too was surprised they'd ship you slabs o' slate. Wonder if they hand sort through so you get some good stuff?

I want to try the do-it-yourself gold mine where they ship you a rail car full of material that you have to pulverize, chemically treat and smelt to winnow-out the gram of gold hiding within. ;)

Cheers.

Well, still cheaper than a trip out to Utah. :)

South Beloit--there's a name from the past. Anybody who got scuba certified within 100 miles from there likely did their open water training dives in Pearl Lake in South Beloit. You mean to tell me there were trilobites nearby and I never knew it? I've discovered this forum much much too late.... :)

Cheers.

It seemed like an awesome spot to hunt. Considering it took us an hour and a half to get out there it was quite the let down...

But we got to hike just north of it, and i found a small gastropod and Rugose. So it wasn't a total loss.

It sounds as though i need to get on the ol' squawk box and call some quarries near and around that area. If anyone has ANY leads in my first Trilo hunt it's much appreciated.

Stateline Quarry in South Beloit would be a good one. If its still accessible (phone first) and Id check with the folks at the Burpee Museum of Natural History in Rockford...they used to have the keys to all the quarries.

Did anyone ever try that Stateline Quarry? I'm new to this, in the Milwaukee (southeast Wisconsin) area, looking for a place to hunt...
