A New Ordovician Trilobite Genus & Species

Recommended Posts

A highly anticipated package has arrived from Spain. Attached below is one of two holotype casts of Kierarges morrisoni, a new trilobite genus and species named in my honor by the Great Spanish Trilobitologist: Joan Corbacho. One of the holotype casts has been donated to the University of Oregon's spectacular collection of trilobites. When Kierarges was first being described, it was thought to be a new species of Nerudaspis. Eventually all the specialists agreed this Moroccan isoteline trilobite is actually a new genus as well, giving it the special distinction of being a type species.

In any event, it deserves its own thread in this recently created forum of outstanding paleontological contributions. This news event was reported a couple weeks ago in my open trilobite papers thread. I thought it could sneak under the radar when I posted a couple of inconspicuous trilobite papers. I probably should have anticipated that someone might spill the beans ahead of schedule!

In a million years I would never imagine such a great reward for the research that brings so much fulfillment to every day. Geologically speaking, I'm hoping that 15 minutes of fame will be quite a long time!

I'm still getting my mind around "new genus"...

Congratulation! It must be exciting to have a species named after you but to have the type species for a new genus is just fabulous.

Hi,

Congrats Scott ! It is already very pleasant to have our name quoted in the thanks of a publication, but to have a fossil which bears your name, it must be even more pleasant !

Thanks to all for the wonderful comments and encouragement. Every day I pause by the shelf where my namesake is proudly displayed, and still have to pinch myself, the impossible dream is reality! I also want to mention what a great privilege it is to collaborate with an amazing trilobite specialist like Joan Corbacho. Thanks also to the kind generosity of so many other trilobite workers that have been assisting with many ongoing research projects along the way. Because trilobites are so incredibly fascinating and magnificent, the research work is not really work at all. Confucius said it best: "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."

Wow, skip TFF for one day and see what you miss! Congrats Scott :) Did you find this one, or recognize it as something different, or was the name in honor of multiple past contributions to trilobite paleontology? I just want to hear more details of this story
