A more linear way to visualize it is: there are 1 000 000 millimeters in a kilometer. (1000 mm in a meter, times 1000 meters in a km)

The national debt converted from dollars to millimeters would be ~17.5 million kilometers, which is about halfway to Venus at its closest approach.
