Devonian Ammonoid And Cephalopod From Central Ny

Several weeks ago my daughter found an awesome hashplate in the creek at Tinker Falls in Tully, NY. The matrix is shale as opposed to limestone but other than that, I can't place the particular horizon.

As I was reinspecting some finds in order to think about displaying them, I noticed this piece and thought that the long crinoid stem may lead to a calyx in the matrix.

Upon closer inspection, I saw a small fault and wedged it with an old steak knife I had at hand. Instead of finding a calyx, I found...

The negative is flipped over and displayed next to the positive. I can clearly see that it is an ammonoid, and looking at Linsley, I see Agoniatites vanuxemi?

This one I found last week in a different creek in Cortland County, and it is in limestone. Linsley has an unspecified cephalopod that looks most like this.

I'm having a blast this summer creek walking and finding all kinds of fossils. Thanks to everyone on TFF, I'm thinking more about origins and prep for display.

That ammonoid is very cool, Brewcuse! :envy:

The ceph is neat, too.

Can't help with ID's but the devonian NY guys should weigh in soon.

Thanks for posting.

Nice finds and good job to your daughter for her cool fossil. However, there are those that will correct you and tell you that these are in fact Ammonoids and not Ammonites. Not me (I call them Ammonites) but others. ;)

Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

Thanks, I thought so too! We found a bunch of crinoids Sunday, so I was thinking about a calyx and looking at that plate again I thought there might just be enough room for something happening. It split so easily that I thought nothing doing and then… :D

Oops! I'm guilty of the layperson's terminology, I'll pay better attention to my -oids next time! Thanks for the heads up mikey...

Don't know if you noticed you have one on the outside there too?

Or is it the same one?
