Megalodon Teeth From Rare Locations

THobern

Recommended Posts

I've been collecting Megalodon teeth from rare, foreign locations; outside of the U.S.A, Peru, Chile or New Caledonia. Initially I bought the teeth as they seemed interesting, but it reached the point where I had a drawer dedicated to these teeth. I've managed to collect Megs from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Cuba, England, Germany, Morocco and Portugal. It's likely that I'll soon be buying a tooth from Malta. Some of the teeth are absolute junk, while others range from decent to spectacular. I was wondering if anyone else had any teeth from rare locations, as I might be interested in trading or buying. I'll also be buying a 5 1/2" Cuban Meg in a few weeks.

Sounds like you need a meg from the South Pacific? I was going to buy some while in Tucson, but they are waaaay overpriced for me.

That would be New Caledonia and considering how relatively common the teeth are from there, I'm not too interested. Not that the site has turned up anything great. I'm interested in locations that aren't known for their commercial Meg teeth. I'm hoping to get teeth from Holland, France, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, South Africa and Australia.

Nice collection, I like the one from Germany. Would really like to see a complete one from there.

Ditto- I also like the German tooth a complete one would be sweet !!!!

Yeah. It's a great tooth. Unfortunately, both the Austrian and German teeth were found at constructions sites. The Austrian teeth were found in 1966 and the German tooth in 1988. Needless to say, both sites are now long closed. I do love the Austrian Hubbell tooth.

I gotta say my favorite is the Argentina specimen. Take what you can get from any of these locations.

I have to agree there. The reason that I've added the fragments from Belgium, is that they were all I could find. I really do like the Argentinian specimen. Apart from a slight nick in the root lobe, it's a lovely little tooth in its own right. As for Moroccan tooth, however, it's spectacular. There are some better photos at the site from which I bought it.

Welcome! Here's a pretty rare C. megalodon tooth from the latest Miocene (7 Ma) Purisima Formation of central California.

Are you referring to the Italian megs? Why would you presume they aren't legit?

Yes, I was referring to the Italian Megs. Don't be so quite to write my question off as "presumptuous". Firstly, I've had problems in the past with this dealer selling repaired teeth as unrepaired. It's possible that something could be up with the teeth, especially the two teeth next to one another. Another thing that made me suspicious was the misidentification of the second tooth as I. hastalis, suggesting the seller is not very well informed. There is also a suspicious change in the matrix colour around the base of the second tooth. Lastly, scepticism is necessary when dealing in fossils. It's possible that the teeth were partial when found, and were attached to matrix. There are just too many frauds out there.

ok, so let's be honest. when you heard the martian rovers had found traces of water on mars, how many of you went "water? oceans - sharks - meg teeth - ROAD TRIP!!!"

I'm with THobern,

Those italian teeth are attached to the matrix, never seen a complete one from this site.

All the teeth that I've seen on sale from there (at fossil shows/online) are attached cause they don't have complete roots.

In my humble opinion someone keep good ones and put uncompletes on chunks for sale, arguing that are the best or unique examples from that site.

Thanks, I had my suspicions. I'm not going to drop 200 dollars over a composite.

Good to know. I've never had a problem with this dealer before, but I'm sure anyone could be taken by what looks to be a nice specimen. My knowledge on megs from exotic locales is limited, so any tips from other collectors is much appreciated.

I bought a large Otodus from them. I was told that there was no repair. The whole root was glued together, restored and soaked in pva.

THobern:

I have 3 or 4 megs from France. These are not large teeth but I seem to recall they are essentially complete teeth. I'm a little hesitant regarding their exact size/condition since I am not home at this time. I will be back home by March. If you are still looking for examples from France, contact me at that time and maybe we can work out a trade. I also have some megs from Belgium but just can't recall anything about them at this time. :)

Thanks, I look forward to seeing them. I had found several French teeth available online, but they were a little too expensive.
