Mattalic
We went to St. Clair this weekend in search of some great ferns and maybe a shot at some insects. We didn't find any insects, but got a few very interesting pieces (I posted a preview on some in the ID section). Here are some shots at some of our take - I am experimenting with different preservation techniques (including varying thicknesses of butvar solution) on the very flaky white material. (1) Wonderful specimen coming off a twig - part and counterpart: (2) Varying smaller specimens with that great graphite-like preservation. Gorgeous textures are visible in the plant material. (3) A relatively large plate we extracted with many different species: (4) Another relatively large plate with many different species (missing at top is a species with more curved leaves): (5) Close up of some of the material in the plate: I also posted an close-up of a odd looking leaf or "flower" (whorls) in the ID section, which I will concatenate here: With a scope close up: - note pen tip for scale: Edited July 25, 2014 by Mattalic
erose
Nice stuff. That first one is a beautiful "specimen" of that particular plant. That enlarged thing at the end is interesting, But, FYI, no flowers that far back.
Mattalic
Yes appologies - used it as a descriptor for Sphenophyllum whorls.

Mattalic
Hey Matt, Glad to see you got there and did very well! Thanks for posting your results. Regards, Thanks for the directions - very helpful. I plan on going again, now that I know what to expect. Has anyone found insects from this locality? I saw a wing on a thread, but the preservation at the site seems perfect for it... First time identifying ferns - #1 Alethopteris? Plates (#3,4,5) include Neuropteris, Sphenophyllum whurls, Alethopteris and Pecopteris. Woody-ish material seems also to be present perhaps scraps of Lepidodendron or Sigillaria? No patterning so just guessing of what would be arround. Last image still unknown, although the ID thread got some great feedback.
