Cephalopod Or Gastropod?

I picked this up among a large haul recently. The specimen itself is quite faint (and not just the limitations of my ipad camera and poor photography skills). I see faint striations on the shell, and certainly characteristic coiling.

It is Middle Devonian.

Thank you, Bob! As we share the same region, is this fairly typical of the Dundee Fm?

And I am in awe of your ability to drill right down to taxonomy with my poorly taken image - an exceptional talent!

Yes I would think so , but they are getting harder to find because of the work that is being done at Hungry Hollow .

It's a lot easier to tell the difference with better preserved specimens but one thing that I find that fossil collectors are good at (aside from collecting fossils) is hunch feelings. When in doubt go with what your gut says . That seems to work for me 90% of the time.
