A Small Lesson Learned At Calvert Cliffs, Md

Recommended Posts

We took our second fossil outing down to Calvert Cliffs State Park in Maryland. I had read that being the first to show after a storm is the way to go so we set out from NJ while it was still raining. We had a nice hike in and to say the least we couldn't wait to get to the beach to find some freshly washed up treasure. We got to the water and discovered it was covering the already small beach that is there and were hit with some rather fierce wind blowing in our faces. Maybe we should have given the storm a little more time to calm! We still poked around for a few hours and had a great time anyway.

The beauty of being new to a hobby is that everything is a first and the best one you've found yet. Our treasures for that day.

The tides certainly control the beach, but wind fetch controls the tides more than the moon does. It works both ways, so sooner or later you'll be treated to a 'blow out', and all will be right with the world! :)

Great on site pics and as far as being new and everything you find is your best one yet, I don't know if I've ever heard a more true statement lol! Congrats on your finds :)

Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!

next time try and go when the tide is low and the winds are out of the Northwest; the water will be blown away from the cliffs and more beach/hunting area is exposed. The rewards will be higher but unfortunately so will the competition,

I'm glad you enjoyed your adventure, and I'm looking forward to seeing your future finds.

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

If you are going to make the long drive to MD from NJ you might want to learn how to use the NOAA site, CBOFS, at the below link, especially the "Forecast Guidance" for "Water Level" and "Wind". The site is really accurate as it uses buoy data along with other forecasted data. However, you need to make repeated trips so you understand what the water level numbers mean at each site, 20 feet of beach or water up to the cliffs. You also need to understand how with the same water levels wind speed/direction can blow the water in or out. As a minimum you can see at what time the lowest water levels are expected and if you will have to deal with high winds.

Oh man, that just looks like an average day on the California coast, or a mild winter day. For localities I'm comfortable at, a 2m strip of sand between waves = game on. Then again, most collecting in CA is done from the cliffs themselves rather than looking for teeth along the beach, so in CA it's OK when most of the beach is covered up.

Hi lordpiney. It was right around three hours. Traffic was pretty light at the time. I imagine during rush hour it could go up significantly.
